How to define your career ambitions

“How does one define career ambitions? How do you even make them scalable?

How do you keep yourself on track to achieve those ambitions you have set for yourself?

Can you even have a scalable career ambition if you are in Tech? That’s not possible.

In tech you have to know everything thus it will be hard for you to scale your career ambitions.”

How to define your career ambitions

Nimeziweka in quotes because those are the misconceptions that people talk about here and they make you believe it.

Being in tech does not mean you must know everything, just know what is right for you.

Lakini before we start talking about Career ambitions and what you can do to scale them, ebu tusalimiane.

Habari yenu lakini? Unaendelea aje? Natumai uko salama and you are keeping safe.

Tuko in the hard times.

So many people usually lack the know-how of how to scale their career growth.

This is because you rarely take time to define the career staircase for you to follow.

You may also want to read this article on finding the right career I wrote a while back.

And yes, in my world, I have a lot of staircases, this is because I define everything for myself.

Today, we will talk about what you can do to define your career ambitions and to make sure they are scalable.

But, remember, I am not a certified career guide, I am giving you tips based on personal experience.

Thus, feel free to consult with a career guide specialist who is certified if you need further clarification.

Now, let’s get into the topic.

What are career ambitions and why they matter?

How to define your career ambitions

When this question pops up, I like to think that career ambitions are the visions of what you plan to do with your career.

Ambitions are the milestones that you are setting for yourself to conquer.

Do not get me wrong, Google has a pretty distinct way of defining ambitions, but this is my definition.

Thus, career ambitions are those milestones you plan to conquer on your career growth journey.

They matter because they keep you on your toes.

Ambitions usually serve well as a motivation to keep on doing what you do and keep getting better at what you do.

Hence, having ambitions is a way to drive you to become better at what you do.

Therefore, having career ambitions is great and you should get to sit down and list them down, they will come in handy.

Okay, now let’s find out how to make your career ambitions scalable.

Put down on paper what you want to achieve for your career in a breakdown.

The breakdown can be in months, in the semi-quarterly year, in years, or in weeks.

It is truly up to you to decide how your breakdown will be. My breakdown is in months.

You are gonna want to put it down on paper because it is going to aid your memory.

“How will this help my memory G….?”.

This is because it has been scientifically proven that human beings will remember what they wrote down rather than what they did not.

Read all about that here on this article.

Another benefit that will come with writing it down is that you can check out what you have done and keep track of the progress.

Probably you are not a fan of journaling but maybe you can teach yourself to start now!

It really does help. I have been able to learn JavaScript and Python quite fast because of this tip.

Try it sometime and find out whether it will work for you.

Have a to-do list for your career ambitions.

To-do lists are not everyone’s cup of tea, I know but just change the list to fit you.

Career to-do lists do not exist, I came up with them for myself. I listed all the things I plan to do for my career daily.

This helped me learn some concepts that I never thought existed in the world of tech.

I have been able to figure out what I will be doing daily to improve my competency in my career.

Learning new things is my cup of tea and I love discoveries; thus, I take advantage of that to discover something new concerning my career path.

The to-do list makes sure that I never go out of the learning curve.

Listing down the things I have to do in a day like

“Code a portfolio script in Js to make it responsive” or “look for a Django project to work on over the weekend”

Helps me improve on my accountability skills of making sure I get to where I want to on a daily step-by-step process.

Build your career map for yourself and follow that map.

Recently, I came across some E-books telling me “how to become a data scientist”, and yes I fell in love!

It has been my dream to do machine learning and become an engineer in machine learning but there is a map I need to follow.

how to define your career ambitions

First, I am required to become a software engineer and that is why I am doing a BS in Software Engineering.

Then, I will have to learn some deep learning, Natural Language Processing, Video processing Machine Learning algorithms and so much more.

Then when I am done with that, I will have to build my own ML framework as a project to know whether I have understood the concepts or I am still not there yet.

And after all of that, there are some dummy projects I may need to work on to perfect my skills, then I am gonna become a Data Scientist.

That path will require a lot of time, energy, and dedication because it requires my optimum attention.

It is the roadmap that was laid out to me on the E-book, but that is now what I will do.

I sat down and I defined my own personalized roadmap that will just work for me.

I’ll start off as a Front-end developer intern, then move to a full-time software engineer, then become an ML engineer.

Simple, learning all the things they have laid out for me, I will do that when I am an Intern!

That is my roadmap.

It’s a wrap on how to define scalable career ambitions.

Maybe you guys have never noticed but I love doing quick tips and thus I am careful not to bore you.

Anyway, I have told you what I do to scale up my career growth and measure it against my ambitions, will you do what I do?

Let me know in the comments section below.

Some of my Pinterest fans are asking that I should do these tips on YouTube and I am not sure.

What do you guys think I should do, nimake videos out of them or I just don’t?

I would really like to hear your opinions so leave them hapo kwa comments.

I really have to go now, so until we see each other in the next article,

Kwaherini!!!
